The MOSFET transistor is considered to be the most important device in the integrated circuit (IC) industry. Its size has been steadily decreasing by a factor of 2 every two years, thus respecting Gordon Moore's law. Its power consumption is also continually decreasing for each new generation of transistors designed. With this growing demand for higher speed, lower power consumption, and higher integration density devices, the size of the transistor has been steadily decreasing, going from a few micrometers to a few nanometers.
